A police officer was fatally shot during an attempted robbery at an Arima supermarket on Sunday night.

According to police reports, Acting Police Corporal Sheldon Peterson, 54, was outside the Awesome Foods and Drinks supermarket when a beige-colored vehicle pulled up. Multiple individuals exited the vehicle and tried to force Peterson into the store.

Peterson, who was licensed to carry a firearm, managed to draw his weapon and fire at the assailants. One of the suspects returned fire, striking Peterson. The suspects then fled the scene in the vehicle.

Peterson was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other individuals, a 62-year-old man and a 40-year-old man from Arima, were also injured in the shooting.

Police responded to the incident and launched an investigation. Both injured men were transported to the Arima District Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

Crime scene investigators recovered 12 spent 9mm shells at the scene. While Peterson’s magazine was found, his firearm was missing and believed to have been stolen by the suspects.
