Man Suicides By Cop At Gas Station Pretending To Pull Out A Weapon

A 25-year-old man, identified as Ithalo dos Santos Nascimento, was fatally shot by military police following an encounter shortly after he left a convenience store at a gas station in the Coroa do Meio neighborhood, located in the South Zone of Aracaju. The incident occurred on Monday night (28). Ithalo, a waiter in a local bar, was off duty at the time.

According to his family, he had departed from his home in the Marcos Freire III neighborhood of Nossa Senhora do Socorro, Greater Aracaju, around 7 p.m. Later in the evening, he contacted his wife to inform her that he had parked his motorcycle in the São José neighborhood, near the bar where he worked, and that he was walking from there.

In Coroa do Meio, Ithalo reportedly made two purchases at the convenience store before being approached by members of the Special Tactical Motorcycle Group (Getam). Family members shared that he suffered from anxiety and depression.

The officers, as documented in the Police Report (ROP), stated that while they were refueling their motorcycles at the station, Ithalo appeared to simulate reaching for a weapon and moved toward them. One of the officers fired a shot, resulting in Ithalo’s death at the scene. However, an investigation by the Criminalistics Institute revealed that he had only a cell phone and some plastic items on his waist.

Ithalo’s body was laid to rest on Tuesday afternoon in Nossa Senhora do Socorro, where he leaves behind his wife and a one-year-old son.
