A disguised a 911 call as a pizza order, according to deputies. This inventive tactic allowed her to communicate with emergency services without alerting her attacker, and it ultimately led law enforcement to her location just in time.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office released the tense 911 recording on Facebook, where the woman is heard asking to “order a pizza.” Although the dispatcher initially assumed it was a routine call, they quickly realized something was wrong as she continued to describe her “order” in an odd and coded manner. Recognizing the hidden plea for help, the dispatcher began asking careful questions to gather information without alarming the suspect who was with her. The woman responded as if customizing her pizza order, which allowed her to subtly indicate that she was in immediate danger. Despite being unable to provide an exact address, she gave just enough clues for the sheriff’s communications team to pinpoint her general location.
With the location narrowed down, deputies were dispatched to a nearby field where they believed the woman was in distress. Arriving on the scene, deputies approached cautiously and began a search on foot. As they advanced, Sheriff Mike Chitwood described hearing loud music playing from somewhere in the field—a critical clue that directed them closer to where the incident was unfolding. Following the sound, deputies eventually came upon a man on top of a screaming woman. The officers intervened immediately, apprehending the suspect and freeing the victim.
The body camera footage captured the harrowing moment when the traumatized woman confided in deputies that the man had attempted to rape her. Sheriff Chitwood later explained that the woman was acquainted with her attacker, as the two had gone to the field initially to have a couple of drinks together. However, the situation escalated after the man consumed drugs and became aggressive, ultimately trying to assault her.
This incident underscores the bravery and resourcefulness of the victim, as well as the quick response and adaptability of the dispatcher and deputies. Through her courageous quick thinking and their training, a potentially tragic outcome was averted.
