A patient at the Municipal Hospital of Morrinhos, located in the southern region of Goiás, took a nurse hostage on Saturday night (18). The man, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, used a shard of glass from a window he had broken moments earlier. Witnesses captured footage of the incident, which reportedly stemmed from a psychotic episode.
The situation unfolded around 8:30 p.m. while the man was hospitalized in the ICU. Military police arrived at the scene and attempted to negotiate his surrender. However, instead of complying, he became increasingly aggressive. At one point, as the nurse tried to break free, both fell to the floor near a stretcher.
According to eyewitness accounts, when the suspect refused to release the nurse and even attempted to cut her with the glass, officers intervened and opened fire. Initial reports suggest they aimed for his leg but struck him in the abdomen instead.
Despite receiving immediate medical attention, the man succumbed to his injuries. The nurse, though visibly shaken and in a state of shock, did not sustain serious injuries.
The Morrinhos City Hall has assured that psychological support will be provided to hospital staff and the suspect’s family. Additionally, measures will be implemented to enhance security at the facility.
