A laborer, Shabari M, aged 32, lost his life after a tragic incident involving firecrackers during Diwali celebrations turned fatal. Shabari, a resident of Konanakunte in Bengaluru, was celebrating the festival with six friends on the night of October 31. The group, allegedly intoxicated at the time, decided to set off firecrackers as part of their festivities. Amid the celebrations, a dangerous dare was proposed that would ultimately prove fatal for Shabari.
According to police reports, Shabari’s friends challenged him to sit on a box filled with lit firecrackers as part of a bet. One of his friends reportedly promised Shabari an auto-rickshaw if he successfully completed the challenge. The stakes were high; if Shabari refused or failed, he would supposedly have to leave the city. Encouraged or pressured by his friends, Shabari accepted the dangerous dare and proceeded to sit on the box of firecrackers, unaware of the catastrophic injuries he was about to suffer.
Moments later, CCTV footage captured the group moving away to a safe distance, leaving Shabari seated on the box. Within seconds, the box exploded, with shrapnel and flames causing severe injuries to Shabari. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors attempted to save his life. Sadly, after several days of treatment, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, leaving his friends and family in shock and grief.
Following his death, the police took swift action. The Konanakunte police registered a case under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, an offense that holds the friends accountable for their reckless involvement in Shabari’s death. All six friends involved in the incident—identified as Naveen Kumar, Dinakaran, Sathyavelu, Karthik, Satish, and Santosh Kumar—were subsequently arrested and are currently in police custody as the investigation continues.
This incident has sparked significant attention and concern among locals, highlighting the severe risks associated with reckless behaviour, particularly when alcohol and dangerous materials like firecrackers are involved. Police officials have advised the public to exercise caution with firecrackers during festivals and avoid risky behaviour that could endanger lives.
