A homemade firebomb detonated inside a public high school in Chile on Wednesday, sparking a fire that injured at least 34 students and one teacher, with several in serious condition, according to firefighters.
A group of students aged 15 to 18 at the Barros Arana National Boarding School in central Santiago were reportedly preparing Molotov cocktails in a bathroom for an upcoming protest when one of the devices exploded, said police Lt. Col. Fernando Albornoz. The cause of the explosion remains unclear. Authorities discovered bottles and fuel cans that were likely intended for making the incendiary devices.
Fire department Capt. José Manuel Estefane noted that 11 students were hospitalized in serious condition due to burns affecting their respiratory systems.
Authorities reported that the other injured students suffered lighter burns, while a teacher who attempted to assist them collapsed and was taken to the hospital. Firefighters swiftly contained the fire and closed off roads in the area.
Local media indicated that the students had intended to cause chaos at a traditional farewell party for graduating seniors.
High schools and universities throughout Chile have a long history of activism dating back decades. During significant social upheaval in 2011 and 2019, students, including those from Barros Arana, adopted a confrontational approach toward the government and business elites to advocate for political reforms
