Police report that a driver is recovering from minor injuries after veering off the road, rolling over an embankment, and landing upside down in a backyard in suburban Maple Ridge on Friday.

Ridge Meadows RCMP received calls about the single-vehicle rollover around noon, specifically at the 14000-block of Mier Drive.

The dramatic incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, shows the vehicle flying over the embankment before crashing down.

RCMP spokesperson Corp. Brett Urano noted that the car caused damage to several backyards before finally coming to a rest upside down in the last yard impacted.

He stated that the RCMP is investigating the cause of the crash in conjunction with the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service. Authorities have already determined that driver impairment was not a factor.

“We’re still looking into whether the vehicle malfunctioned or if it was driver error,” Urano told CBC News. “Fortunately, there were no people in the yards at the time, and the only injuries were minor ones sustained by the driver.”

B.C. Emergency Health Services confirmed that two ambulances were dispatched to the scene shortly before noon. Paramedics treated the driver on-site before taking them to the hospital for further evaluation.

While police have not disclosed the driver’s identity, they confirmed that the individual was wearing a seatbelt during the incident.

“Without that seatbelt, the outcome could have been very different,” Urano remarked.

Witness Kevin Kunst, a Chilliwack resident who happened to be passing by during the crash, captured the aftermath on video and described it as unusual.

“You don’t see that every day,” he told CBC News. “[The car] was coming down a big hill, hit a ditch, and then it … flew.”

He likened the incident to the popular series The Dukes of Hazzard, which features two brothers racing through a fictional town in their car.
