Alarming police body camera footage shows the moment a Virginia woman was shot and killed by an officer after she charged at him with a knife.
Sydney Wilson, 33, a commercial real estate manager in the DC area, was the subject of a welfare check at her Reston apartment on September 16 at 10 a.m. Officer Peter Liu, with 14 years of crisis intervention experience, knocked on her door, which Wilson opened momentarily.
When Officer Liu identified himself, she swiftly closed the door. Over the next three minutes, he continued to knock until Wilson, standing at 6 feet 6 inches, opened the door and charged at him with a knife.
During the altercation, Wilson allegedly stabbed Liu multiple times in the face before he fired his weapon. He retreated down the hallway, firing three more shots while calling for assistance.
Wilson received CPR at the scene but was pronounced dead from her injuries at a local hospital.
Police Chief Kevin Davis praised Officer Liu for his response, emphasizing that he prevented a potentially worse outcome.
“It could have been much more severe; the injuries he sustained were significant,” Davis noted.
The welfare check had been requested by a mental health professional. Chief Davis explained that such checks typically involve collaboration with mental health experts, but the usual co-responder was unavailable at that time due to another call.
He indicated that the absence of a clinician may have heightened the risks involved. “Clinicians encounter dangers whenever they go to a scene with police,” he said, adding uncertainty about whether a mental health professional could have changed the situation.
Wilson, a former Georgetown University basketball player, was remembered in an Instagram post by her alma mater: “Georgetown women’s basketball mourns the tragic loss of Sydney Wilson (C’13). Forever a Hoya.”
Officer Liu is currently on administrative leave while an internal investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
